Wordcamp SEO Review
Posted on 15. Nov, 2009 by Marc McDermott in SEO
Yesterday’s Wordcamp NYC blogger track seminar did appear to be a total wash for those veterans of wordpress. A total wash indeed until the 4:15 SEO blog review with Corey Eulas. With an otherwise unruly crowd, Corey did a fantastic job of using his SEO knowledge and experience to silence the crowd despite a few bad self-proclaimed SEO experts in attendance.
I’ve been to a lot of SEO conferences, and I do not recall any where members of the crowd challenged a speaker who is an expert in his field that had volunteered his time to speak at the conference. In the end, the audience were the only ones to lose out by cutting down the time Corey had to demonstrate and share new SEO ideas, tactics and strategies.
In speaking with Corey afterward at the Tonic happy hour, he concluded that there needed to be a few different levels of SEO classes – beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Too many people wasted everyone’s time by asking such questions as, “what is an h1 tag?” For the sake of everyone paying to attend, I hope next year Wordcamp at least considers the multiple levels of SEO classes.

In case this doesn’t get posted on the WordCamp site:
My vote goes for Corey Eulas and his session on SEO Blog Review. I know Corey personally and his extensive knowledge and drive on SEO is something that everyone should have gained from. He is truly one of the rising stars in the SEO/SEM field. Unfortunately, his session was marred with newbie questions (”What is a H1 tag?”) to self-proclaimed “SEO experts” trying to stump or disrespect him to promote themselves. I know, if anyone ever can get the chance to speak with Corey for 5 minutes, they would know that he would be a strong asset for their SEO/SEM needs.

I saw other informative sessions and some that were not so well organized. I also attended one sessino where the first 5 minutes was a shameless self promotional video that had nothing to do with any sort of training. But Corey Eulas did energize the crowd and it was a tough audience. I had a blast at the SEO session. Hope he gets invited to Boston or Toronto.

Corey’s presentation at WordCampNYC was amazingly eye-opening for myself, who knows very little about SEO. Despite the tough room (which I found unecessary), I found Corey to be on top of his game and handled the crowd like a pro.
I agree that SEO needs more time than what was given, but we must commend Mr. Eulas for donating his time. I will be implimenting a lot of his presentation into increasing our website’s SEO.
Also, as a freelance web designer that has been working with WordPress, this is definitely knowledge that I could include into my business.
